Always chivalrous with the “ladies first” order of holidays, it’s finally time to give the dads their due. Whether they are fixer-uppers, fishermen, or the type to yell at the TV screen at every sports game (or all of the above), our fathers are some of the most influential figures in our lives. Say your thanks this coming Sunday by taking Dad out for one of these specials. You might have to endure a few embarrassing stories told to the waiters, but hey, that’s why we love our dads.

South Water Kitchen – Loop

Get a head start on Father’s Day with this delicious dinner held on Saturday, June 15th. Five courses will be paired with five beers, such as pretzel crusted salmon with Half Acre Over Ale. At $60 per person, this is a great night out for the brew-loving dad. See the rest of the menu here.

deca Restaurant –Gold Coast

If your dad has his heart set on brunch, this one is bound to be a winner. The Beef, Bourbon & Beer buffet at deca Restaurant spells out what it has to offer, and what dad can say no to that? This one is a pricey treat ay $79 per person.

Bistro Dre – Lakeview

Bistro Dre has a little something special to spoil dads after dinner. Every father gets a complimentary piece of cheesecake, drizzled in decadent strawberry sauce. Of course, everyone likes getting a present, so they’ll get a gift bag as well.

Theory Chicago – Near North

Does your dad hate getting all dressed up? Skip the ties and take him to Theory. Brunch won’t disappoint with a waffle bar, sandwiches galore, and breakfast favorites. Dad can relax as the US Open plays on their many TVs. $4 Stella Drafts will keep the celebration going.

David Burke’s Primehouse – River North

This classic steakhouse is offering special items for both brunch and dinner, but that’s not all. All fathers will get a to-go next day lunch featuring steak sandwich, pasta salad, and a peanut butter brownie. Now that’s looking after Dad.

May St. Café – South Loop

If your father likes to buck the norm, May St. Café is a great option. They’ll be serving up a special contemporary Latin buffet for Dad’s Day. At $24.95 for adults and $12.95 for kids, this is a great deal to celebrate a great dad.

Father's Day meals kids can help make for dad

This Father's Day give dad a break from the kitchen. Lots of kids love to help in the kitchen and there are numerous easy-to-prepare recipes that they can help with.

Representatives from Marcel's Culinary Experience in Glen Ellyn joined ABC7's Mark Rivera to demonstrate a recipe kids can make for dad.

Marcel's Culinary Experience has cooking classes for kids and multi-day cooking camps year round.

Coconut Ginger Shrimp and Pineapple Skewers
serves 8 as appetizer

1 lb large shrimp (26-30 count), shelled, deveined
1 can coconut milk, divided

salt and pepper to taste
Bamboo skewers

1. To medium bowl add half the can of coconut milk, 2 tablespoons shallot, 2 tablespoons ginger, and 2 tablespoons lime juice. Stir to combine and add shrimp. Marinate in refrigerator for no more than 30 minutes.

2. While shrimp is marinating make sauce. To a small sauce pan add remaining coconut milk, 1 tablespoon ginger, 1 tablespoon lime juice, and pineapple juice. Bring to simmer and cook over low heat, maintaining a simmer, until sauce thickens, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in lime zest. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt, pepper and lime juice. Set aside.

3. Preheat a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Place pineapple between paper towels to dry. Remove shrimp from marinade and pat dry. Season shrimp with salt and pepper. Once pan is hot, add 1 tablespoon of grapeseed oil. Sear shrimp about 2-3 minutes per side, or until just cooked through. Transfer shrimp to plate. Sear pineapple until golden brown, flip and brown on the other side. Transfer pineapple to cutting board. Cut pineapple in 1-2-inch pieces. Skewer shrimp and pineapple on bamboo skewers - either alternating or with pineapple piece in between head and tail of shrimp. If needed, rewarm coconut sauce. Plate skewers, drizzle with coconut sauce and garnish with cilantro.

Note: Prefer to grill? Both the pineapple and shrimp can be prepared on a gas or charcoal grill.

Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Pancakes

Serves: 4
Yields: About 12 pancakes
Oven Temp: 200

  • 1 cup(s) multigrain pancake mix, such as Up Country Organics
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup(s) all-natural peanut butter
  • 1 cup(s) milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract
  • 1 cup(s) semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon(s) unsalted butter

1. Heat oven to 200 degrees F. Stir the pancake mix, egg, peanut butter, milk, vanilla, and chocolate chips together in a large bowl. Melt about 1 teaspoon butter in large, nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Pour three to four 1/4-cupfuls of batter on the heated skillet to form pancakes and cook until the tops bubble and the edges begin to crisp. Turn and continue to cook for about 2 more minutes, until both sides are golden brown. Transfer pancakes to a baking pan and keep warm in the oven until ready to serve. Repeat with remaining batter.

3. Healthy Fish & Chips

For the dad who loves the sea, and who needs to watch his weight, there’s the healthy fish and chips recipe! This recipe is another of the fairly easy Father’s Day dinner recipes, and it pleases any dad who could always go for a hearty plate of some tasty fish and chips. For this recipe to go swimmingly, you’ll need these ingredients:

  • 1 pound of cod filets, each sliced into 4 smaller square filets
  • 1 cup all purpose flour, divided
  • 1 teaspoon roasted garlic pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • lemon slices (garnish)
  • 2 russet potatoes sliced into thin strips (like French fries)

With all of this handy, the recipe is relatively simple if you follow these instructions:

  1. Mix all of the spices, as well as 1/2 cup of flour in a Ziploc bag. Place each filet into the bag one at a time and seal before coating thoroughly with the mix. Place on a clean, dry plate and repeat with all other filets.
  2. Take the egg and whisk it in a small dish. Place the other 1/2 cup of flour in a separate small dish. Dip each cod filet into the egg, coat completely, and then place into the flour. Ensure the filet is thoroughly covered, and repeat with each remaining filet.
  3. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a skillet at medium heat, and add the filets. Cook the cod until golden brown, which should take about 6 minutes on each side, for a total of 12 minutes.
  4. For the chips, heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet. Set heat to medium, and once heated, add the potato strips and season with salt. Allow them to cook, stirring and flipping frequently for about 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
